This is Day Three of the March Madness poultry judging. For previous pairings, instructions, and a copy of the bracket, please see our other "blog" posts.
Ducks aren't something everyone is comfortable judging, and for a good reason: they are a completely different species! That doesn't mean they can be overlooked or dismissed at any show. Over 530 different breeds and varieties are accepted in the APA, and the four different classes (heavy, medium, lightweight, and bantam) can leave it just as competitive as some of the landfowl counterparts. This is the only accepted variety of Welsh Harlequin, so this pairing would be exclusively for Best of Breed. I will have more lightweight ducks and other waterfowl coming up in the bracket.
Take a stab at these two, even if you aren't as familiar with waterfowl. Which one is closer to the standard, and why? Leave your comments and thoughts below, and the top few will be shared in the results post.
Editor's Note:
I am working out things with our judges, and will hopefully have results for Day Two posted soon. Stay tuned.
Thank you to Riley Rupp for providing images of their breeders!
When looking at this class and interpreting the standard, they both fit quite nicely. I personally believe that the female has the better structure to her while the male has the better coloring. The only thing that makes me hesitant to place the female above the male is because of the collar. From the picture it doesn’t look complete, if that is correct, it would result as a defect.
